All About Marks Out Of Tenancy
Our Values
🗣 Empowerment
We believe every renter deserves a voice. We amplify tenant experiences so that others can make more informed, confident decisions about where to live and who to rent from.
🤝 Fairness
We're here to promote fairness—not just between renters and landlords, but across the entire housing ecosystem. We support responsible landlords while holding bad practice to account.
📢 Transparency
Access to information should be open, honest and useful. We’re committed to shining a light on the rental sector through genuine, real-world experiences from real people.
🧭 Independence
Marks Out Of Tenancy is driven by renters, not property interests. We operate independently so that we can stay impartial, focused on social impact—not profit alone.
🌍 Community
We work with local authorities, student unions, charities and grassroots groups to support communities who often face the sharpest end of the housing crisis.
🔒 Integrity
From secure data handling to fair review moderation, we operate with integrity and care. We’re committed to doing what’s right—even when it’s not the easiest option.
Renting shouldn’t be a leap in the dark
We started Marks Out Of Tenancy with a simple idea: renting doesn’t need to be so uncertain. The process isn’t too complicated – the problem is that renters rarely get access to the full picture.
So, we built a way to change that. A way to pass on knowledge from one renter to the next.
Marks Out Of Tenancy helps you make more confident, better-informed decisions about where to live, who to rent from, and what to expect.
What is Marks Out Of Tenancy?
It’s a website for renters to rate and review their experience of a tenancy. Every review includes ratings on the landlord, letting agent, property, and neighbourhood – giving a more complete picture of what life is really like there.
Before signing a tenancy, renters can explore:
-
What’s the landlord like to deal with?
-
Is the letting agent responsive and professional?
-
How does the property hold up over time?
-
Is the neighbourhood right for your lifestyle?
Our Mission
We’re here to improve conditions in the private rental sector. It’s that simple.
We believe that by amplifying renters’ voices, we can drive change faster than legislation alone ever could. Our platform gives tenants the tools to share their experiences and help others avoid poor housing conditions.
How we keep things fair
To make sure reviews are reliable and not skewed by extreme ratings, we use a Bayesian weighting system. The more reviews a landlord or agent receives, the more accurate their overall rating becomes. You can read more about how it works here.
We also have safeguards in place to prevent defamation or abuse. Our system automatically filters out offensive and potentially defamatory language, and we have a clear complaints process if concerns arise.
A Social Enterprise, Not Just a Website
Marks Out Of Tenancy is a mission-driven organisation. We use commercial tools to create positive change in the housing sector. Though we’re not a charity or CIC, everything we do is centred around improving the lives of renters and promoting social good.
Why this platform matters
While regulations matter, they often move slowly. Our platform allows renters to hold housing providers accountable in real time – even those who fly under the radar.
By putting the power of information into renters' hands, we make it easier to:
-
Avoid rogue landlords
-
Highlight great places to live
-
Push for higher standards across the board
