The flat was handed over in terrible condition:
• Kitchen cupboards were rotten with damp — I was afraid to put anything heavy in them in case they collapsed.
• Kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and shower were all unsealed.
• Damp patches on the walls.
• Filthy skirting boards.
• No proper ventilation for the oven.
• Single-glazed windows, making the flat freezing cold in winter.
• Electric meters were in a locked external basement — I had to rely on the landlord for readings.
Before I moved out, I spent a full day scrubbing the flat and left it spotless — much cleaner than when it was handed over to me. I didn’t even get a “thank you” or any acknowledgment.
When I asked for my deposit back, I was ignored at first. I had to chase them several times with formal emails. Eventually, they replied, claiming it would take 14 days and blaming delays on half term(!). A week later, still no refund.
I then discovered my deposit had never been registered with a Tenancy Deposit Scheme, which is a legal requirement. After I sent a formal email threatening legal action, they finally said they would refund it — but even then, it took more chasing over the next few days before I actually got it. No apology was ever offered.
