★★★☆☆ – Functional but Flawed
The flat was perfect for what I needed at the time — a decent amount of space, good location, and generally functional. However, there were several issues that made living there less comfortable than it should have been.
The biggest problem was insulation. In summer, the flat would become unbearably hot — it reached 38°C at one point — and in winter, it was freezing unless the heating was on for 9+ hours a day. This made it both uncomfortable and expensive to maintain a livable temperature.
There were also a number of maintenance and design flaws:
- The kitchen sink was plumbed incorrectly, so the dishwasher would drain into the sink first.
- The bath and shower were poorly sealed, leading to water damage risks.
- Laminate flooring was coming away from the skirting boards.
- The flat hadn’t been painted in over five years, and it showed.
- Old chimneys and fireplaces were still in place, which added to the draftiness.
Communal areas were also in poor condition. The stairs had holes in them, the banisters were rickety, and the whole space felt like it needed a serious update. Being on the third floor, this wasn’t ideal.
In short, the flat served its purpose, but it came with a long list of issues that made it feel neglected. With some investment and care, it could be a great place — but as it stands, it’s far from ideal.
