Property was not set up to be a proper apartment. Apartment is 'garden flat' underneath the landlords' property which is basically part of their property but with own access. This was not private access as landlord had to use same access to get into the basement.
Due to the apartment being just a converted part of the landlord's house, the biggest issue was the noise. You could hear every step they made in the property above. The landlord would be loudly walking around until midnight and running appliances into the night and the spouse would get up and walk incredibly loudly at 5am. They had no regard for their noise levels after raising this as an issue. This meant being woken up often in the night and being incredibly tired every day. This made the apartment incredibly stressful to live in, considering the spouse was very rude, unresponsive and abrupt when in contact also and made living in such close quarters very difficult.
In addition, landlord did not give 24hours notice to enter the property and often treated it as if they still lived in it. Their cats would often enter the property with them.
We had no control of the heating or hot water due to the property being part of their house which was very difficult. When they used the tap, if a tenant was already showering it would turn the water cold.
At the end of the tenancy they complained of water damage in a separate toilet which did not get used and there had been no visible leaks. The landlord was meant to carry out inspections to check for such issues but did not after the first year. They did not give our deposit back due to this, and also had not put the deposit in a desposit protection. They were very unpleasant to deal with, especially towards the end.
I do not recommend this apartment, despite the convenient location. If the landlords wish to rent part of their property they should insure it is properly sound proofed, otherwise it is unlivable.
